5 Car Noises that Require Immediate Attention

January 27, 2022 By Rokkit

Does your car sound different than it has before? Is there a sound you’ve noticed for a while and ignored? Listening to your car is actually very important as the sounds it makes can be a clue that something is not right.

1. Squealing or Grinding Brakes A common noise that a car makes could be related to your brakes. Squealing or grinding sounds can be due to the brake pads or shoes being worn down. In other words, your car may not have enough brake pad thickness to keep the metal components from touching. If you catch this early, you may only need to replace the pads. However, unsolved brake problems can cause brake failure, as the components of the brakes touching directly can damage the discs. When brake parts are worn out, they’ll lose effectiveness to the point where they might fail completely. Once this level of damage occurs, your braking system may become unsafe and unpredictable. Other causes may include brake callipers that were incorrectly mounted or have somehow come loose.

2. Hissing or Chirping Engine Hissing sounds coming from your engine can suggest that it is overheating, or the exhaust system or catalytic converter is plugged. A hiss may also point out a vacuum that has leaked. Noises can also be due to engine fluids leaking into hot exhaust parts. This could cause damage to your engine and are also dangerous fire hazards. Chirping sounds can suggest that the timing or serpentine belt in the engine has become loose or damaged. Some automotive belts can be adjusted, whilst others must be replaced. If left unaddressed, these engine issues will become worse which could be a danger to your safety and will inevitably end up costing more to repair.

3. Rattling Wheels/ Steering Wheel The rattling noise in your car wheels could indicate that something isn’t right with the way they are attached to the car. For example, a lug nut may have come loose and started rattling as the wheel turned around. Noises from your steering wheel may indicate low power steering fluid or damage to a component in the steering column. Issues with these car components can make the vehicle harder to manoeuvre as the problem develops, making your vehicle dangerous to you and other cars on the roads.

4. Rumbling/ Exhaust pops If your car sounds like it is rumbling when you accelerate, there could be a hole in your muffler. Although holes in your muffler are not detrimental to car performance, they are dangerous since they may allow dangerous fumes to leak into the passenger compartment. A popping noise can also indicate that there are leaks in the fuel injector, resulting in engine damage or increased fuel consumption and poor emissions.

5. Whirring Acceleration Worn-out universal joints, parts needing lubricant, or a faulty torque converter are all causes of engine whirring when your car is speeding up. In addition to its many gaskets, hoses and wires, your car’s engine also has several rotating belts. Over time, these belts can stretch or crack as they circulate at high speeds around a system of pulleys which can be another cause of the whirring sound. It is important to check this noise out because replacing worn out parts can prevent severe problems from occurring. Noises can give you great clues as to what issues your car is facing and can help indicate what aspects of your vehicle need altering. Never ignore a noise emitted from your car no matter how small or insignificant it may seem, as it is always better to be safe rather than sorry.

5 Reasons Why You Should Never delay an Oil Change

September 22, 2021 By Rokkit

Have you had a look at your car’s dipstick recently? Most drivers know how critical an oil change is to a well-running engine. If you’re not sure, here are 5 reasons why you should never delay an oil change.

Haval Engine Oil Change

It makes your engine run smoothly

Many of your engine’s parts, like pistons and valves, are continually moving as you cruise down the road. They need to be sufficiently lubricated to avoid being damaged. Oil provides this essential role. Over time, the heat from the engine breaks the oil down, and it becomes impure with dirt and debris, making it impossible to do its job.

Haval Dipstick

Keep Your temperature down

Oil helps keep engine parts cool. Moving parts create friction, which in turn creates heat. Engine oil is the right solution to reduce friction and prevent your engine from overheating.

Oil Changes Removes Sludge

Every time you change your oil, your technician replaces the oil filter as well, taking particles and sludge from your engine’s systems. Dirt and dust are deadly to your vehicle, causing decay over time, decreasing the life of your vehicle’s motor. If you don’t change the oil regularly, it breaks down and turns to sludge. Keep your engine running at peak condition with clean oil.

GWM Engine Oil change

You’ll See Better Gas Mileage

There are several factors that affect the fuel efficiency of your car, including the area where you live and your driving habits. A poorly maintained engine won’t perform at its best, leading to increased fuel use.

Your Car Will Last Longer

It’s a simple fact that owners who routinely change their oil can expect their vehicles to last longer than those who miss this important maintenance. Build-up from dirty oil makes your engine work harder, wearing out internal components faster.

GWM Dipstick

An engine that works too hard will end up with a shorter life span, and a lower value if you plan to sell it or trade it in for something new. Having copies of these regular maintenance records increases its resale value. Reports state that regular oil changes are a better indication of proper upkeep than tune-ups and further state that this habit is a good sign that your car has been cared for.

Getting your oil changed regularly may seem like a hassle. However, it’s a necessary task if you want to hop in your car and go. If you’re not comfortable changing the oil yourself, book our experienced professional mechanic to do it for you at our dealership.

Feeling flat? Here’s how to jumpstart a car with a battery booster pack

August 23, 2021 By Rokkit

It can be a good idea to keep a car battery booster pack in your car. That way, you can jump start your battery even if you can’t get another car to help you.

Battery Booster

Before you start, make sure:

  • The car battery doesn’t look damaged and isn’t leaking.
  • You’ve taken off any metal jewellery or watches and removed dangling clothing like a tie or scarf.

Steps to using a car battery booster

1. Check the battery booster
  • Make sure the packs fully charged
  • Put the battery booster pack somewhere stable. Don’t put it on the engine as it might fall off when the engine starts.
Red Jump Cable
2. Connect the red jump lead
  • Connect the red positive (+) jump lead from the battery pack to the positive (+) terminal of the car battery.
3. Connect the black jump lead
  • Connect the black negative (-) jump lead to an earthing point on your car. Unpainted metal on the engine block or chassis is the best.
4. Switch on the pack
  • Once the battery packs connected, switch on the pack.
Battery Booster
5. Try to start the car
  • Try to start your car by turning the key in the ignition.
  • If it doesn’t start after a few tries, there’s probably a more serious problem that needs help.
6. Let the engine run
  • If the car starts, keep the engine running for about 5 minutes.
  • After 5 minutes switch off the booster and allow the engine to run for a further 5 to 10 minutes.
7. Turn off and disconnect
  • Turn off the engine.
  • Remove the leads in the reverse order to how you placed them on (first disconnect the black lead, then the red lead).
8. Restart your car
  • Try turning the keys in the ignition to see if the car starts up again.
What to do after you’ve jump started your car

If you’ve managed to jump start your car, the engine will need to recharge again fully.

Charge the engine by driving normally (not in stop-start traffic) for at least 30 minutes. You can also use a portable car battery charger to top up the charger on your battery.

How often should you change a car battery?

On average, batteries last between 5 and 7 years but you should only consider changing a car battery when it’s showing signs of deterioration.

If the battery’s more than 5 years old and seems like it’s struggling to start the car, get if checked out. It’s better to be safe than sorry-it’ll be worse if it’s a roadside emergency or on a cold morning when you’re already late for work.

Car Maintenance Tips for Winter

August 16, 2021 By Rokkit

Winter can be a challenging time for car owners. Cold weather and heavy rain can cause problems with tyres, engines, and other functionalities. To ensure that your car runs smoothly and safely during winter, here are a few tips:

Battery check for winter

Is your battery giving up?

Winter can seriously damage your car battery, especially if you park it outside. Avoid the sinking feeling of hearing nothing when you hit the ignition with a proactive check of your battery and charging system. Repair shops usually do not charge much to test your battery, many car parts stores will not even charge you a fee. If you find out your battery’s going out, you can replace it at a suitable time, instead of being at the point of whatever shop your deceased car is being towed to.

Engine Maintenance for winter

Check your parts

To improve aerodynamics and save petrol/diesel, today’s cars are equipped with higher detailed underbody panels and low-hanging front spoilers. When driving through heavy rain in the winter, you could end up ripping off the entire panel and possibly its mounting hardware. Check underneath the car, starting from the front, to see if any loose parts are hanging or flapping around before the ground gets too cold. You might be able to replace it or put it back in place. Cable ties or duct tape will do the trick.

Underneath car

Stop or at least slow corrosion

Vehicles resistance to corrosion has come a long way in the last couple of years. Take a good look at the car (ideally after a good wash) for any scratches or dings where you can see the bare metal under the paint. Paint should be applied to these. A professional repair is better, but if it’s out of your budget, you can do a quick fix yourself. Clean the area with some solvent (acetone or rubbing alcohol) and apply a clear coat of nail polish. You can even buy touch up paint in your car’s colour and it will work. When it comes to the prevention of rust on the underbody, keeping it clean is the best thing you can do. In addition, spray a few cans of Fluid Film on the metal parts of your underbody.

Front lights

Wax the lights

Keeping your headlights clean will make a difference in the darkness of winter. Here is an easy two-minute recommendation: Make sure the headlights are clean of dirt, rub car wax (any brand will do) on the lens, let it dry and buff it off, repeat. Also, do the taillights. The slippery surface you leave behind will be less likely to build up an ice coat when you are driving, it will make it easier to remove it if it does.

Don’t forget to check the pressure in your tyres weekly, to keep your fuel tank half full, and to protect your windshield wipers.

Maintaining a vehicle is very important. I hope these tips helped make your driving safe and maintain the condition of your vehicle. The winter is perhaps the most critical time for proper vehicle maintenance.
