Here are some tips from CMH Haval Pinetown what to do when your car overheats

August 15, 2022 By Rokkit

WHY DO ENGINES OVERHEAT?

Engines can overheat for a number of reasons. It could be because something’s wrong with the cooling system and heat is not able to escape the engine compartment. The source of the issue could include a cooling system leak, faulty radiator fan, broken water pump, or clogged coolant hose. Regardless of the problem’s source, an overheating engine isn’t something you want to let go of. Your engine could sustain serious, if not permanent, damage.

Here are some tips CMH Haval Pinetown can advise when a problem like this occurs:

# KILL THE AIRCON AND CRANK THE HEAT.

Immediately turn off the air conditioner to reduce stress on the engine. Then, turn the dial to maximum heat. This can help pull heat away from the engine to keep it from overheating until you can pull over in a safe location. You may get a tad hot yourself, but a few minutes of discomfort is a small price to pay compared to major engine repairs.

#FIND A SAFE PLACE TO PULL OVER.

Pull over and shut off the car. Allow the engine to cool for at least 15 minutes. Keep an eye on the temperature gauge, as it should move back to a normal range as the engine cools. While you’re waiting (and watching the gauge), put together a plan to get your overheated engine checked out. Call a friend, a tow truck, or your local Roadside Assistance for help.

#CHECK AND ADD COOLANT

If your coolant level is low, a quick top-off could help protect your engine and prevent overheating until you can get things fixed. However, this step won’t do much good if a coolant hose is clogged or the source of your troubles is a broken radiator fan or water pump. Consult your owner’s manual to find the location of your coolant reservoir tank and to learn how to add coolant to your vehicle.

# RESTART THE ENGINE.

If your car isn’t being towed, now’s the time to carefully restart your engine and drive to CMH Haval Pinetown. Keep an eye on the temperature gauge as you drive. When it rises again, pull over and let the system cool.

WHAT NOT TO DO WHEN YOUR ENGINE OVERHEATS

# DON’T PANIC.

Your engine isn’t keeping its cool, but you can! Avoid swerving through traffic or slamming on your brakes when pulling off the road.

#DON’T KEEP DRIVING.

If your engine is overheating but still running, you’re not doing it any favours by staying on the road. You may be able to get to your destination before it gives out entirely, but you may cause significant (and costly) damage by pushing your engine too far.

# DON’T OPEN THE BONNET IMMEDIATELY

Once you’ve pulled over, wait for the engine to cool before popping the bonnet to check things out. Opening the bonnet immediately can put you at risk of burns or injuries from spewing steam or smoke. Patience is key. Wait until the engine temperature gauge settles before opening the bonnet.

# DON’T LET THE ISSUE LINGER.

An overheating engine won’t resolve on its own, even if it seems to be fixed after you add a touch of coolant. It will only get more serious if left unaddressed. Get to the root of the issue before you damage your engine.

HOW TO PREVENT AN OVERHEATED CAR ENGINE

Take care of your car, and it will take care of you. The most effective way to prevent an overheating car engine is to have regular coolant flushes and exchanges performed on your car. In addition, you should keep up with radiator maintenance as recommended by your vehicle manufacturer. Routine inspections can also help you fix any potential radiator or engine issues before they worsen.

This August, feel the heat at the beach, not on the road. Keep your cool. Start making your adventurous journey with Haval and GWM

Here are 5 things every car owner needs from CMH Haval Pinetown

July 27, 2022 By Rokkit

There is a lot of commitment involved in buying a new car. The ownership of a vehicle involves regular maintenance. It is possible to depend on towing services most of the time. However, there are still instances when a few minor issues here and there can save you a lot of time and money. Check out the 5 essentials every car owner should have:

#The vehicle Owner’s Manual

It is the most basic and underappreciated asset of your car that can help you in an emergency. The owner’s manual is generally kept in the glove compartment and contains all the information about everything in your vehicle. For example, you can read about the required tyre pressure or recommended fuel levels. In short, it is a driver’s best friend for troubleshooting or maintenance-related advice about your vehicle. For every vehicle that is delivered at CMH Haval Pinetown, the owner’s manual is explained.

#First Aid Kit

A first aid kit is an inexpensive item that every car owner should have in their vehicle. Accidents can happen anytime, and real danger might be just around the corner. You might end up in a difficult situation in a remote area, and that’s when the first aid kit is the only medical help you can get. For passengers travelling on long routes with little connectivity, it can be a lifesaver. So, it’s highly recommended that you keep a first aid kit in your vehicle containing all the basic medicines and bandages.

#A Spare Tyre with a jack and spanner

A flat tyre is probably the most common issue you will face as a car owner. The funny thing is that it usually happens when you least expect it. You need to always have a spare tyre in your car as it saves a lot of time. You will also need compatible tools to replace your flat tyre. A spanner and a jack are convenient and valuable items that you can rely on when replacing your flat tyre.

#Jumper Cables

A dead car is never a pretty sight and causes a lot of frustration for travellers. Your vehicle could die in the winter season or when the battery weakens to a point where the car cannot start. In such a situation, you need jumper cables that help to kickstart your battery. You will not need to head to the repair shop if you have someone who has a car battery near you. These jumper cables are used to charge one battery through another.

#A Bottle of Windshield Wiper Fluid

Windshield wiper fluid is a very underrated item that most people neglect. When you drive in cold weather or under foggy conditions, your visibility diminishes, and it is almost always bleak. There are high chances of accidents if you can’t see clearly. You should invest in a high-quality windshield wiper fluid and always keep your visibility clear. You can purchase one at CMH Haval Pinetown’s workshop.

You can also keep other items in your car, like your phone charger, blankets, and a flashlight. You can keep the things you feel would help you in your journey, as they can prove helpful at times.

5 things to keep in mind when choosing the right mechanic

June 10, 2022 By Rokkit

Choosing the right mechanic is important when your vehicle needs attention. Visiting our workshop CMH Haval Pinetown, you will never make a mistake with repairing or servicing your vehicle with us. Here are some questions to keep in mind when choosing the right mechanic:

1. Have you repaired or serviced cars like my brand before?

When you use a new mechanic that you have never tried before, it’s important to ensure they have worked on cars of a similar brand and model to yours. This is especially important if your car different make or if you drive something like a diesel truck, which will require special maintenance. Making sure the mechanic you choose is experienced with cars like yours is one of the best ways to guarantee a good experience. CMH Haval Pinetown workshop is RMI approved, we can repair any brand.

2. Do you offer free quotes before the actual job is done?

When you visit a new mechanic, you should be able to get an estimate for services without paying out of pocket. As you interview a new mechanic, make sure you ask about their estimate process. It is essential to get the estimate in writing with a clear understanding that once the repairs begin if anything else is discovered, you’ll get a call to approve any additional repairs & expenses before they’re started. We feel it’s important to note here: Estimates are just that, estimates. There are times more is going on with a vehicle that may need attention and can’t be known by the mechanic until they get under the hood. Giving complete information when you bring your vehicle in is very helpful, as is developing trust with your mechanic that they will give you their best advice and service.

3. Do you provide a warranty for parts and services?

No matter how experienced a mechanic is, parts are imperfect. So, what happens if the mechanic puts a part in your car that fails? Most reputable workshops deal with this “what if” by providing written guarantees on parts and labour – up to a certain time limit. Some shops also go by mileage.

For example, a repair shop may guarantee a 1-year/12,000-km warranty on a part, or offer discounted replacement parts, if you find you need them. Be sure to ask your repair shop about their warranty policies.

4. How do you handle unexpected expenses?

Consider this: you took your car to the mechanic for some engine repair. You agreed on the price and the timeline and walked away happy. When they open the hood, though, they discover a cracked hose that needs to be repaired, too. What do they do? Knowing the answer to this question can mean the difference between paying for work you agreed on and walking into the workshop to discover an unexpected bill that’s much higher than what you agreed to pay. Be sure to ask in advance how your mechanic will handle surprise repair bills.

5. How long have you been in business?

Good mechanics are experienced mechanics. Before you move forward with any workshop, ask how long they’ve been in business. This will be an important factor when choosing a mechanic. The best workshops have a long track record of success, lots of great customer reviews (Google or Facebook are great places to read a workshop’s reviews), and plenty of experience to back up their claims. These workshops pride themselves on building relationships with their customers and going above and beyond to ensure client satisfaction.

When are your car repairs covered by car insurance?

May 19, 2022 By Rokkit

There are many things that fully comprehensive insurance can cover, as long as you have the right policy with the right company. While a regular compulsory third-party liability policy will help take care of the other party involved in an Incident, you need to make sure you are well covered and something more comprehensive to cover your own property and assets.

What type of repairs can be done, how the repairs are done, and which repairer can do the job are all questions that are part of the insurance policy that you take? Every insurance is different, but the most important thing is you get your worth out from what you are paying and make use of your policy. CMH Haval Pinetown offers different types of insurance with the best rates.

The basic role of car insurance

When you get involved in an accident the main role of insurance is to pay out for the damages that have been incurred. Regular wear and tear are not covered by any insurance policy unless you take a policy that is only meant for that. This also means that you will not be paid by the insurance agency for any of the above circumstances of wear and tear claim. You will only be paid out for what the policy states and a certain portion will be paid. You can even tow your vehicle to our workshop at CMH Haval Pinetown to be assessed and send through a claim to your insurance agent. Here are some of the things car insurance types will cover.

Body damage

Provided that you have an add on in your policy, collisions and accidents will be covered. If you’re involved in a vehicle accident with a third party or on the road, and your car has been badly damaged, then it should be possible for your policy to cover the repair costs. Also, the policy can also protect you against acts of vandalism.

If mechanical damage occurred due to the accident and not wear and tear, it’s also possible for the policy to assist your repair bills.

Provided your policy has the right cover in detail, it can cover the repair costs of your car if an act of nature damages it. Things like a flood, falling rocks, and falling fruit, may be covered by the insurance provided. There is a certain amount that is allocated for these.

Mechanical issues

If your car breaks down because of negligence, wear and tear, or normal use, the insurance policy might not cover it unless it comes with a provision for a mechanical breakdown, but even then, that will be subject to approval. If the mechanical repair is required because of an accident, then it is covered under your insurance policy.

The warranty comes to play in this part. The car manufacturer warrants your car for a set period. During that period, you will be able to make a claim in case there are any problems related to the manufacture of the automobile. Consumables like brake pads, fluids, and oils are generally not covered by a warranty or an insurance policy. You must cover that cost on your own.

5 Ways to Prep for a Long Road Trip

February 2, 2022 By Rokkit

Whether you’re embarking on a spring break road trip or just heading out for an afternoon drive, these tips will make the journey more joyful and less “are we there yet?”

From the road trip games to the road trip snacks, there’s a lot to love about road trips—but poor planning can take your joyride from a great time to a total stress event. Ensure the success of your next road trip with these smart road trip tips, which will ensure your drive goes smoothly, even if poor weather or a roadside catastrophe strikes.

Find the right car organizer for your needs, download, or update your preferred driving directions app, and get excited to start driving: These road trip tips will ensure everything else (other than picking a destination or route, of course) is taken care of.

Give your car a check-up

Check your fluids (oil, brake, transmission, and wiper), tyre pressure, and treads, Assess the wear on your tyres with a coin: Press the edge of the coin inside the tyre groove. If you can see the top of the head, the tyre needs replacing. If wiper blades make noises or leave streaks, get new ones before you hit the road.

“You don’t want to find out your wipers don’t work while you’re on the highway in a deluge of rain,”. Make sure your first aid kit is stocked, and program a roadside service number into your phone to save yourself if a tyre goes flat.

Plan your route

Aim to find a single spot where you can take a break, get gas, eat, use the bathroom, and spend time outside. The app is a great way to discover fun locals that can turn a break into a quick, family-friendly diversion. On a longer trip, take a break every two hours or 100 miles. It’s good for your body and will make you a more alert driver.

Pack it right

Look up your vehicle’s GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) in the manual to find out how much total weight your car can hold. Subtract the car’s curb weight and passenger weight to calculate how many kilos of luggage you can add. Don’t overload your car, which is bad for gas, mileage, tyres, and safety. When you pack, stock-heavy items low and toward the car’s centre, putting progressively lighter items on top. This method limits the danger from projectiles in a sudden stop and, by keeping the car’s centre of gravity low, can help prevent rollover.

Set up your seat

Adjust the seat height to keep your hips slightly higher than your knees. If you have bucket seats, you may want to place a cushion or rolled towel behind the small of your back. The steering wheel should be close enough that you can grip it without locking your elbows. The old “10 and 2” hand position is no longer considered the safest, due to steering wheel airbags. Instead, try 9 and 3. Once you’re comfortable, adjust your mirrors so you can see out of them without craning your neck.

Maximize mileage

Frequent braking and accelerating can put a dent in your gas budget (and annoy passengers!), so use cruise control on highways to maintain speeds. The way you pack can also affect mileage, especially when you stock things on the roof: Reserve that spot for light but bulky items, like sleeping bags. 5 Car Noises that Require Immediate Attention

January 27, 2022 By Rokkit

Does your car sound different than it has before? Is there a sound you’ve noticed for a while and ignored? Listening to your car is actually very important as the sounds it makes can be a clue that something is not right.

1. Squealing or Grinding Brakes A common noise that a car makes could be related to your brakes. Squealing or grinding sounds can be due to the brake pads or shoes being worn down. In other words, your car may not have enough brake pad thickness to keep the metal components from touching. If you catch this early, you may only need to replace the pads. However, unsolved brake problems can cause brake failure, as the components of the brakes touching directly can damage the discs. When brake parts are worn out, they’ll lose effectiveness to the point where they might fail completely. Once this level of damage occurs, your braking system may become unsafe and unpredictable. Other causes may include brake callipers that were incorrectly mounted or have somehow come loose.

2. Hissing or Chirping Engine Hissing sounds coming from your engine can suggest that it is overheating, or the exhaust system or catalytic converter is plugged. A hiss may also point out a vacuum that has leaked. Noises can also be due to engine fluids leaking into hot exhaust parts. This could cause damage to your engine and are also dangerous fire hazards. Chirping sounds can suggest that the timing or serpentine belt in the engine has become loose or damaged. Some automotive belts can be adjusted, whilst others must be replaced. If left unaddressed, these engine issues will become worse which could be a danger to your safety and will inevitably end up costing more to repair.

3. Rattling Wheels/ Steering Wheel The rattling noise in your car wheels could indicate that something isn’t right with the way they are attached to the car. For example, a lug nut may have come loose and started rattling as the wheel turned around. Noises from your steering wheel may indicate low power steering fluid or damage to a component in the steering column. Issues with these car components can make the vehicle harder to manoeuvre as the problem develops, making your vehicle dangerous to you and other cars on the roads.

4. Rumbling/ Exhaust pops If your car sounds like it is rumbling when you accelerate, there could be a hole in your muffler. Although holes in your muffler are not detrimental to car performance, they are dangerous since they may allow dangerous fumes to leak into the passenger compartment. A popping noise can also indicate that there are leaks in the fuel injector, resulting in engine damage or increased fuel consumption and poor emissions.

5. Whirring Acceleration Worn-out universal joints, parts needing lubricant, or a faulty torque converter are all causes of engine whirring when your car is speeding up. In addition to its many gaskets, hoses and wires, your car’s engine also has several rotating belts. Over time, these belts can stretch or crack as they circulate at high speeds around a system of pulleys which can be another cause of the whirring sound. It is important to check this noise out because replacing worn out parts can prevent severe problems from occurring. Noises can give you great clues as to what issues your car is facing and can help indicate what aspects of your vehicle need altering. Never ignore a noise emitted from your car no matter how small or insignificant it may seem, as it is always better to be safe rather than sorry.

How to Change a Tyre

November 8, 2021 By Rokkit

Experiencing a tyre blowout can be scary – you need to make sure you are in a safe place and a calm state before following our advice on how to change a tyre.
How to Change a Tyre spanner
How to Change a Tyre
What equipment do you need? Apart from the spare wheel, you will need the following: *Wheel Spanner – for taking out the wheel nuts *Jack – for lifting the car up *Wheel chock – to stop the car from rolling when jacked up *Wheel nut key – if locking nuts are fitted *Car handbook – for reference You can also carry: *Torch – (check batteries regularly) *Gloves – wheels will be dirty *Reflective jacket – to make you visible *Warning triangle – to alert other drivers to a hazard/obstruction *Short plank of wood – as a flat surface to steady the jack *Tyre pressure gauge – for checking the new tyre is fully inflated 1. Prepare the car Apply the handbrake and remove all passengers from the car. Take the spare wheel and necessary tools out of the boot. 2. Position the wheel chocks/bricks Shocks prevent the car from rolling while jacked up. Position a chock on the opposite wheel to the one with a puncture. For example, if your left-front tyre has a puncture, put a chock behind the right-rear wheel. If your left-rear tyre is flat, you need a chock in front of the right-front. Use chocks for both front/rear wheels (as appropriate) if you have them. Bricks or large rocks can do the same job if you don’t have a dedicated chock. 3. Loosen the wheel nuts It’s easier – and safer – to do this while the car is on the ground. You may need to lever off a plastic wheel trim first. CMH Haval Pinetown How to Change a Tyre Turn the wheel wrench anti-clockwise and loosen the nuts to the point where they can be turned by hand (be warned – they may be tough to loosen). However, don’t remove them completely yet. 4. Jack the car up All cars have dedicated jacking points – consult your handbook to see where these are. Aim to position the jack at the side of the car, close to the punctured wheel. Placing a small plank of wood under the jack will help keep it stable. Raise the car slowly until the flat tyre is 10-15cm off the ground. 5. Take out the flat tyre Fully loosen and remove the wheel nuts, then gently pull the tyre towards you until it comes free. Place it flat on the ground. 6. Mount the spare wheel Slide the spare wheel onto the protruding hub bolts, or in line with the wheel nut slots (warning: it’s heavy to lift it off the ground to do this). Replace the wheel nuts and tighten them by hand. 7. Lower the car and tighten the bolts Use the jack to drop the car down slightly, so that the spare tyre is in contact with the ground. Now use the wrench to fully tighten the wheel nuts. 8. Fully lower the car Bring the car fully down to earth and remove the jack. Consider giving the wheel nuts a final check for tightness. Stow the jack and the other tyre in the boot, along with the rest of your equipment. Note: if your car has a space saver, the old wheel will take up more space in the boot. 9. Check the spare tyre pressure If you have one, use a tyre pressure gauge to check the spare wheel is fully inflated. Alternatively, drive carefully to a petrol station and use the gauge there. Pump up the tyre to the recommended pressure – as detailed in the handbook – if necessary. 10. Take your punctured tyre for repair Visit a garage or tyre fitters at the first opportunity and give them your punctured wheel. They will advise whether to repair or replace it. How to Change a Tyre Spare Tyre Don’t drive on a space-saver spare wheel for longer than is strictly necessary – they are only intended for emergencies. 5 Reasons Why You Should Never delay an Oil Change

September 22, 2021 By Rokkit

Have you had a look at your car’s dipstick recently? Most drivers know how critical an oil change is to a well-running engine. If you’re not sure, here are 5 reasons why you should never delay an oil change.

Haval Engine Oil Change

It makes your engine run smoothly

Many of your engine’s parts, like pistons and valves, are continually moving as you cruise down the road. They need to be sufficiently lubricated to avoid being damaged. Oil provides this essential role. Over time, the heat from the engine breaks the oil down, and it becomes impure with dirt and debris, making it impossible to do its job.

Haval Dipstick

Keep Your temperature down

Oil helps keep engine parts cool. Moving parts create friction, which in turn creates heat. Engine oil is the right solution to reduce friction and prevent your engine from overheating.

Oil Changes Removes Sludge

Every time you change your oil, your technician replaces the oil filter as well, taking particles and sludge from your engine’s systems. Dirt and dust are deadly to your vehicle, causing decay over time, decreasing the life of your vehicle’s motor. If you don’t change the oil regularly, it breaks down and turns to sludge. Keep your engine running at peak condition with clean oil.

GWM Engine Oil change

You’ll See Better Gas Mileage

There are several factors that affect the fuel efficiency of your car, including the area where you live and your driving habits. A poorly maintained engine won’t perform at its best, leading to increased fuel use.

Your Car Will Last Longer

It’s a simple fact that owners who routinely change their oil can expect their vehicles to last longer than those who miss this important maintenance. Build-up from dirty oil makes your engine work harder, wearing out internal components faster.

GWM Dipstick

An engine that works too hard will end up with a shorter life span, and a lower value if you plan to sell it or trade it in for something new. Having copies of these regular maintenance records increases its resale value. Reports state that regular oil changes are a better indication of proper upkeep than tune-ups and further state that this habit is a good sign that your car has been cared for.

Getting your oil changed regularly may seem like a hassle. However, it’s a necessary task if you want to hop in your car and go. If you’re not comfortable changing the oil yourself, book our experienced professional mechanic to do it for you at our dealership.

  • If the car starts, keep the engine running for about 5 minutes.
  • After 5 minutes switch off the booster and allow the engine to run for a further 5 to 10 minutes.
7. Turn off and disconnect
  • Turn off the engine.
  • Remove the leads in the reverse order to how you placed them on (first disconnect the black lead, then the red lead).
8. Restart your car
  • Try turning the keys in the ignition to see if the car starts up again.
What to do after you’ve jump started your car

If you’ve managed to jump start your car, the engine will need to recharge again fully.

Charge the engine by driving normally (not in stop-start traffic) for at least 30 minutes. You can also use a portable car battery charger to top up the charger on your battery.

How often should you change a car battery?

On average, batteries last between 5 and 7 years but you should only consider changing a car battery when it’s showing signs of deterioration.

If the battery’s more than 5 years old and seems like it’s struggling to start the car, get if checked out. It’s better to be safe than sorry-it’ll be worse if it’s a roadside emergency or on a cold morning when you’re already late for work.

Car Maintenance Tips for Winter

August 16, 2021 By Rokkit

Winter can be a challenging time for car owners. Cold weather and heavy rain can cause problems with tyres, engines, and other functionalities. To ensure that your car runs smoothly and safely during winter, here are a few tips:

Battery check for winter

Is your battery giving up?

Winter can seriously damage your car battery, especially if you park it outside. Avoid the sinking feeling of hearing nothing when you hit the ignition with a proactive check of your battery and charging system. Repair shops usually do not charge much to test your battery, many car parts stores will not even charge you a fee. If you find out your battery’s going out, you can replace it at a suitable time, instead of being at the point of whatever shop your deceased car is being towed to.

Engine Maintenance for winter

Check your parts

To improve aerodynamics and save petrol/diesel, today’s cars are equipped with higher detailed underbody panels and low-hanging front spoilers. When driving through heavy rain in the winter, you could end up ripping off the entire panel and possibly its mounting hardware. Check underneath the car, starting from the front, to see if any loose parts are hanging or flapping around before the ground gets too cold. You might be able to replace it or put it back in place. Cable ties or duct tape will do the trick.

Underneath car

Stop or at least slow corrosion

Vehicles resistance to corrosion has come a long way in the last couple of years. Take a good look at the car (ideally after a good wash) for any scratches or dings where you can see the bare metal under the paint. Paint should be applied to these. A professional repair is better, but if it’s out of your budget, you can do a quick fix yourself. Clean the area with some solvent (acetone or rubbing alcohol) and apply a clear coat of nail polish. You can even buy touch up paint in your car’s colour and it will work. When it comes to the prevention of rust on the underbody, keeping it clean is the best thing you can do. In addition, spray a few cans of Fluid Film on the metal parts of your underbody.

Front lights

Wax the lights

Keeping your headlights clean will make a difference in the darkness of winter. Here is an easy two-minute recommendation: Make sure the headlights are clean of dirt, rub car wax (any brand will do) on the lens, let it dry and buff it off, repeat. Also, do the taillights. The slippery surface you leave behind will be less likely to build up an ice coat when you are driving, it will make it easier to remove it if it does.

Don’t forget to check the pressure in your tyres weekly, to keep your fuel tank half full, and to protect your windshield wipers.

Maintaining a vehicle is very important. I hope these tips helped make your driving safe and maintain the condition of your vehicle. The winter is perhaps the most critical time for proper vehicle maintenance.
